For 11 women diagnosed with suspicious breast lumps, hope came alive in Abeokuta as former First Lady of Ogun State, Mrs. Olufunso Amosun, sponsored their free lumpectomy surgeries through her Uplift Development Foundation.
The gesture followed the Foundation’s free breast and cervical cancer screening exercise held in September, where over 600 women were screened.
According to Mrs. Amosun, 22 of the screened women were found to have breast-related issues, prompting her Foundation to sponsor their investigations, surgeries, and post-operative care.
“Cancer is not a death sentence,” she told reporters at the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Idi-Aba, Abeokuta, where she monitored the surgeries. “It only becomes one when people fail to act early enough.”
She urged Nigerians to support women facing health challenges and commended the medical team for their professionalism and dedication.
Dr. Stella Ogunmuyiwa, a consultant at FMC, described cervical cancer as another silent killer among women, while commending Mrs. Amosun for her consistency in sustaining the campaign for over seven years.
Another consultant, Dr. Olabisi Dedeke, advised women to embrace regular check-ups, noting that early detection remains the most effective weapon against cancer.
She added That the annual programme, continues to promote awareness, screening, and treatment support for women across Ogun State and beyond.
